Notation used in this document.
C- : hold the control key down as press second key
F# : function key
ALT- : hold the ALT key down as press next key
SHIFT- : hold the SHIFT key down as press next key
RETURN : indicates that the RETURN or ENTER key on computer should be hit
ESC : indicates the Escape (ESC) key on computer should be hit
" " : encloses key sequence to enter (do not type the quotes)
{} : enclosed a specific example
Basic Usage
To start:
- On homepage, click on the link "Run Dictionary/editor" to launch the environment
- Type: "o {filename}" (you must enter a filename)
To enter English: Activate English mode (Type "F6") and type.
To enter Chinese:
- Activate Chinese pinyin input. (Type "F8")
- Enter the pinyin for the character, word or sentance. Chinese is entered using Mainland Chinese PinYin. In this system: tones are represented: 1(flat),2(rising),3(fall then rise),4(falling) and 5(light). The entry of tones is
optional. The 'u' of girl is entered as 'uu' [nuu3(girl), lu4(road),luu4(green)].
The "r" sound is entered er [yi4dian3er not yi4dian3r].
- Type the "Space" to convert pinyin to Chinese characters.
- If conversion is incorrect, use left-right arrow keys to move under wrong character.
Select correct character by typing its number. If desired character does not appear,
use down arrow for more selections.
- (Use the "F4" key to cancel the conversion of pinyin to Characters)
To exit(and save):
- Type: "C-x C-z"
- Answer "y" to the question
- Type "q" to leave the environment.
Copy or Move text (Cut and Paste)
- Move curser to the beginning of the string of text
- Mark this end of the text (Type: "C-2")
- Move curser to the end of the string of text
- Cut the text (Type: "C-w")
- Position curser where you want the text to appear
- Yank the text (Type: "C-y")
Search and Replace
Forward Searching
- Start search (Type "C-s")
- Enter the words/characters for which to search
- Search (Type "C-s")
- Find next occurance (type "C-s")
Backward Searching
- Start search (Type "C-r")
- Enter the words/characters for which to search
- Search (Type "C-r")
- Find next occurance (Type "C-r")
Replacing all occurances after curser
- Type "ALT-SHIFT-7"
- Enter the words to replace followed by RETURN key.
- Enter the new words followed by RETURN key.
Replacing a word with yes/no option
- Type "ALT-q"
- Enter the words to replace followed by RETURN key.
- Enter the new words followed by RETURN key.
- If want to replace this occurance type "y"
Other specialized commands
Chinese language help: Type: "F1"
delete characters after curser to end of line: Type: "C-k"
Enter a character by its gb-2312 encoding: "F5"
Converting previously entered pinyin to Chinese characters
- Move curser to the beginning of the string of text
- Mark this end of the text (Type: "C-2")
- Move curser to the end of the string of text
- Convert the text (Type: "C-t")
