XTOP: Xiaotu Conference of Science & Engineering
   with Open Participation

Speak & Present Like a Native Speaker

Overview

XTOP ‐ held at universities in Taiwan ‐ provides an opportunity for students in the related fields of science and engineering to present scientific papers in English to their peers in a friendly setting. Originally limited to graduate students and original research, the conference opened to university students in 2019 allowing them to present on scientific topics of their choice. The conference thus endeavours to promote technical exchange in English among graduate students.

The unique feature of this conference is that presenters have the opportunity to receive written feedback on their presentations from established researchers, native English speakers as well as their peers.

Motivation

The organization of this conference was prompted by two trends in Science and Engineering ‐ globalization, and the rise of interdisciplinary research. The purpose is thus two-fold:
  1. To provide students a chance to present (orally) in English in a standard conference setting receiving feedback from established researchers, native English speakers as well as their peers. The hope is that this experience will give students greater confidence in presenting their work in an international setting.
  2. To provide a venue in which students can meet and network with students in other universities and disciplines. The hope is that these relationships will in the future give rise to fruitful collaborations.

Scope

Students at universities in Taiwan and abroad are invited to submit an abstract in the fields of engineering, science and medicine electronically by the posted deadline. Abstracts should fall into one of three categories: (1) Original Research (2) Topic Overview or (3) Life of a Famous Scientist

Presentation Format

Talks (12 minutes plus 3 minutes for questions) will be scheduled in related sessions, chaired by fellow graduate students.

Abstract Format

Submitted abstracts must be in English and between 50 and 150 words long. All abstracts will be published electronically and archived.
